Notes from the Zandmotor

Your own moving sensorial body in relation with this dynamic landscape can be considered as an element.

It often felt my body is inseparable from this place, and even inseparable from the other body’s. Does the other feels as happy as I do when we approach each other in the middle of nowhere. Is the sky as dazzling immense as I feel when it hovers above my head?

I remember all these times, we approach and leave this place, every time different and often performed as a synchronized collective act. We are moving elements in the landscape: approaching, meeting, leaving this place as a repetative pattern over time.

Francois noticed that all our endeavors were really a group thing; never only one person suffered no mostly the whole group suffered or the whole group enjoyed.

Warm up your senses as you want to be conscious of what you very personally experience on the Zandmotor. Often you’re very first notice(s) is essential or relevant. What comes to you, what do you observe, what calls you attenton and then how do you interact with it. Phenomena are whatever we observe or perceive. Your personal observations can be so obvious, so close to you, that you don’t recognize it as actual potential. What appears to you, and what does it mean to you. You’re building up a relation with that what appears to you.

The Zandmotor asks from us an unremitting search for a moment of balance.

Willing to be the one who is in control does not work in this place.

The Zandmotor is one big observatory which will be solved in 20 years.

Choreografie: What are the flows and movements and rythms of the Zandmotor, and then making counter-movements, I saw the sand performing straight lines, I saw the sand performing a grid. Stepping the tides up and down, up and down.

The rhythm of the Zandmotor, the stream of sand along the sealine crawls 3 steps up north and then 2 steps back, 3 steps upwards, and 2 steps back, 3 steps upwards, and two steps back.

How we experience a certain colour depends on what we have seen before. I saw old pink sand, I saw orange sand really (Flor saw it to) , I should have photographed it all. How can I catch it, store it, , share it. Is it a human thing to order. The Zandmotor will be vanished in 20 years.

Trying  to catch the moment, from moment to moment.

When living only in the clocktime, one gets aliented.

Our natural state is that we want to be engaged

A work should work for itself, do you want feedback, simply ask the sky above you, that bird flying over or the 20.000 old years grain of sand you’re standing on, does it connect to them to?

I should have made more notes…

We need,  food, water, air, ground to walk as a base, what if warmth is missing. When is the moment that the artistic actions makes its entry.

Zooming in a personal element in this vast landscape seams a working method, and avoids that you get lost.

Being out there, away from the city on this vast plane where the elements are exposed under your skin, I experience the Anthropocene physically, emotionally and rationally.I am standing on this immense pile of sand digged out from the ocean and dropped here so we can build with “nature”.

Natural and Anthropocene processes are irreversible interwoven with each other and they became a hybrid. The climate is one of our biggest artifacts or hyperobjects (Timoty Morton) These complex systems will never return to their state of origin. So concepts as “a natural balance” will never return. There is no way back, only a way further.

Sensing the Zandmotor with Kenzo Kusuda

Dancer/choreographer/improvisator Kenzo Kusuda visited the Elements lab on 4,11, and 18 april 2016

Kenzo Kusuda was our guest teacher at the Zandmotor, and it opened new spaces to sense this vast volatile environment through his practice.

…”Your body is one bag of water, you can move your body in which everything is floating, your bones are floating and all your organs are floating. Wiggle, wiggle.”…

…”Breathe into your brain and fill it with oxygen, and then you breath into your second brain, which is the space all  around you.”…

… “You can feel and acknowledge your entire finger bone that almost goes all the way till the end of your palm to your wrist / pulse area, then extending that line into your arm, elbow and further.. Extend and see in what position you will eventually end up, what do you observe from this particular / peculiar perspective that you get by chance. How the world looks like to you now? Look around and really see what you see in front of you right here right now and take one deep breath with all there is. ”…

…” Imagine that your transparent body moves from only 5 particles, for example, in the middle of your chest, two in the middle of your both your elbows and two at the upper end of your hamstrings. Moving could become really easy and surprisingly fun, often leading us into somewhere more vibrant, refreshing and at times ridiculously unexpected and sublime. We start to hear the whisper of nature more and more. And off course, our body is nature, as well.”…

…” Moving is really easy.”…

…”Standing in a circle, try to sense / listen to the blood flow (or heartbeat) of the person standing next to you and the one standing next to that person.  You having that intention is enough. Then, as if reversing the process of listening / receiving into ” sending something of you; whatever you may imagine ” it “, maybe some sort of line? or ball? or wave? of your attention (??) or something (? )to the one next to you or the one standing next to that person… And see what happens to the circle of grooooouuup WOWwwwWW! ( Right away the movement of the people’s circle got so turbulent and dynamic, circle of people got flipped over like the sudden movement of sea anemone – one organic unit of life, while the multiple waves circulated around within a second and took it over without physically forcing nor pushing anything.  Everyone burst laughing and having fun in the sun” And easy eay, wiggle wiggle.”…

…” While holding your hand/finger parallel to the sea, imagine that your finger is the container which is filled with 80% water and 20% sky, and if you tilt your hand the water level is tilting as well, until the water finds its equivalence / horizontality once again in the titled container.  Move your body while being aware of its tilting water-levels and its recovery of horizontality within the ever-changing position of the container / finger / hand / other body parts….And not to forget, look out and keep your inner water and inner sky relate and correspond to the water level you see out there in the sea, over the horizon and beyond the cloud sky line.”…

… “You wanna have a happy body.”…

Thank you so much Kenzo!

Myself, I  appreciate the phenomena of arriving and leaving myself as a happy body every week at the Zandmotor even more.

presentations 11 april 2016

Today, we presented our developments so far to each other in the group. And also we had some great guests; Kenzo Kusuda, danser/performer and Matteo Marangoni from the iii-initiative, 2 digging artists Anna and Gregorz, and Francois Lombards from the Satellietgroep. ….OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

A shelter for windforce 9, 10 humans bodies and a dog

8 februari 2016, we went for the first time in the second semester to the Zandmotor. There was a code yellow; wind force 8 and sometimes 9. Never the less, we decided to go.

I prepared a shelter; the pattern looks like a cow skin, we simply attached it to a pole and stacked it with wooden pins in the ground. It was kept up by the bodies inside: it fitted 10 people and a dog. The gathering inside was so noisy, our ears could catch only half of the conversation, but it was worth while: it really great to have a gatherings in sort of impossible circumstances.

Shelterworkshop with the Sandberg Institute (MAD)

15 januari 2016, I gave shelter workshop for Materialization in Art and Design (MAD) of the Sandberg Institute. After the first semester coming every Monday to the Zandmotor in all kind of weather circumstances we noticed that one of the first human needs, besides clothing, food and water,  is a shelter. Can be build a shelter together with the elements.  Can wind be a building material?

Also I brought 50 meter of white wind tight fabric. On the Zandmotor is just looked like a a tiny roll of serpentine. I noticed that one needs at least 100 meter and 8 human bodies for this location to make a firm gesture: to celebrate the wind festive moves.
